Plaka of Athens

Plaka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens City. Impressively clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis of Athens. Notably, it incorporates labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. It is located on the northeast slope of Acropolis of Athens, between Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Square.

The Historical area of Plaka is built on top of the residential areas of the Ancient Athens City. It is known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods” due to its proximity to the Acropolis of Athens and its many archaeological sites.

Adrianou Street is the largest and most central street in Plaka Historical Area. Also, it divides Plaka into two areas. Firstly, the upper level – Ano Plaka – is located right under the Acropolis of Athens. Secondly, the lower level – Kato Plaka – is situated between Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Square. Excavations have proven that Adrianou Street is the oldest street in Athens still in continuous use, with the same layout since antiquity.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit the historical area of Plaka every year.

Museums

Furthermore, the Plaka Historical Area includes a lot of Museums such as the New Acropolis Museum, the New Jewish Museum of Greece, and the Museum of Greek Folk Art. Moreover, it holds an annex which is the Old Public Baths building, the Frissiras Museum, the Museum of Popular Music Instruments, the Museum of Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou, and the Athens University Museum.
